What is the Renault diesel emissions scandal?

In 2015 ‘dieselgate’ came to light, first with the Volkswagen dieselgate scandal, and then with other various car manufacturers who had installed defeat devices to manipulate results on diesel emission tests. These companies, if found guilty, will have purposely misled their customers and breached consumer protection laws and the Competition Act.

While customers were led to believe their new diesel Renault vehicle complied with legal emissions limits, in actual fact they were emitting illegal amounts of nitrogen oxide (NOx), in breach of emissions rules. Renault is one of the many car manufacturers currently believed to have misled their customers in this way.

Following the revelation of ‘dieselgate’, Renault found themselves in the middle of an investigation in France. While analysing various Renault vehicles, researchers discovered that many of Renault’s diesel engines had been emissions cheating in tests and were actually responsible for higher levels of NOx emissions. It would appear that Renault had installed emissions test defeat devices in its diesel vehicles similar to those used by other car manufacturers involved in ‘dieselgate’.

Initial investigations also concluded that potentially the number of affected vehicles under the Renault Group could be up to 700,000. If you have bought, leased, or financed a Renault diesel vehicle that was manufactured between 2008 to 2018, you may be one of those affected by the Renault emissions scandal.

What is a defeat device?

Various huge car manufacturers have been found to have installed defeat devices in their diesel vehicles in order to manipulate emissions tests. Defeat device software works by understanding when a vehicle is being put through a lab test process and will limit the amount of engine power used during the test. This will artificially reduce the emission levels the vehicle produces, ensuring the diesel car or vehicle will pass the emissions test.

But when the same vehicle is tested in real-world driving conditions, they are found to be emitting a much higher amount of dangerous gas NOx, in breach of EU emissions regulations. Increased levels of NOx can lead to several environmental and public health concerns including acid rain, increased air pollution, smog, and respiratory diseases (e.g., lung cancer, asthma, and bronchitis). In the UK, poor air pollution is believed to have contributed to up to 36,000 premature deaths every year.

Why should I make a diesel emissions claim?

There are a host of reasons why you should consider making your Renault diesel emissions claim. These include:

  • You have been misled, don’t let big businesses get away with it: If your vehicle is found to have a device that artificially reduces emissions, and therefore been producing an illegal amount of NOx, the car manufacturer you purchased your vehicle from purposely misled you during the car purchase process. Car owners should hold huge car manufacturers to account for their misleading actions.

  • Renault has put at risk the environment and public health: Increased levels of NOx can result in a whole host of dangers. Through the choices of car manufacturers, the environment has been affected by increased air pollution and risk of smog, acid rain, and damaged crops. Additionally, public health concerns including respiratory diseases, cancer and premature death are all consequences of increased NOx levels, caused, in part, by the use of defeat devices.

  • You deserve compensation for your financial losses: Most affected diesel vehicle owners have likely found themselves out of pocket due to the emissions issue after being misled by major car companies. Whether it’s money spent ‘fixing’ your vehicle, decreased vehicle value, increased fuel costs, or other maintenance-related expenses, it should be car manufacturers paying the price, not the consumer.

  • You have nothing to lose: Our recommended law firm will represent you and your claim on a “no win, no fee” basis. This means you do not need to pay any upfront legal fees and you pay nothing if your Renault vehicle claim is unsuccessful. It is only in the event of a successful claim that you will face any legal fees, and these will be a pre-agreed percentage of your actual compensation amount.

They have done this to line their own pockets, while also blatantly disregarding public health and the environment.

Renault Diesel Emission Claims FAQs

Answers to some of the common questions we are asked about making a Renault diesel vehicles claim

Am I eligible to make a Renault diesel emissions claim?

If you purchased, leased, or financed a Renault diesel vehicle that was manufactured between 2008 and 2018 then you may be eligible for compensation. While research and investigations are continuing regarding the models and engines that have been affected by the Renault dieselgate scandal, a variety of Renault models have already been identified as featuring a defeat device, including:

  • Clio
  • Captur
  • Espace
  • Megane
  • Scenic

However, if you own one of the diesel models manufactured during the affected time frame but it isn’t one of these listed, your vehicle still may be affected, so it is still worth enquiring about a potential claim.

There is no standardised amount of compensation you may receive if your claim is successful. The size of any potential compensation will depend on your individual circumstances, such as when you bought the vehicle, how much you paid for it, and whether it was paid for using finance.

Over 100,000 diesel emissions claims have been settled in the UK, some of these through group actions, with over £100m in compensation having been paid out to customers in England and Wales. In other successful diesel emissions claims, customers have received between 25-75% of their vehicle’s value.

Similar to the amount you may receive, the length in which your claim may take to be decided can also vary. The primary reason behind these varying timeframes, with claims taking from months to years to be decided, depends on the car manufacturer’s willingness to admit to any wrongdoing. The best case scenario is when the manufacturer opts to settle outside of court, in order to reduce any negative press they may receive.

We understand that there are a variety of circumstances that you may believe could impact your ability to make a claim. However, typically if you can prove your ownership of an affected vehicle, you more than likely have a case.

  • Can you make multiple Renault diesel claims? If you owned/leased/financed multiple diesel vehicles that were manufactured by Nissan Renault during the affected time period you can make multiple individual claims. However, you must be able to provide documentation that proves your ownership of every vehicle you wish to make a claim on.

  • I received my Renault vehicle as a gift, can I still make a claim? As long as you can prove your ownership of an affected vehicle, you can still make a claim. For example, if you inherited your Renault vehicle, you can provide a copy of the Will which proves your inheritance.

  • Can I still make a claim if I no longer have possession of the vehicle? Even if you no longer own/lease/finance your previous Renault vehicle, you can still make a claim. However, you must be able to provide evidence of your ownership of the affected vehicle and documentation related to the sale of the vehicle.

If you can provide the required documentation to prove your ownership of an affected Renault diesel vehicle and wish to make a claim, we can put you in touch with a reliable legal representation. Your diesel emissions claim solicitors will represent you on a “no win, no fee” basis.

With our recommended law firm, you will not have to pay any legal fees unless your claim is successful. Even then, the fees you will be required to pay will be a pre-agreed percentage of your compensation amount. If your claim was unsuccessful, you will have nothing to pay. Similarly, there will be no upfront fees to pay when starting a Renault emission claim.

We will then confirm your eligibility and follow up with you on the upcoming procedures.
