What is the Renault diesel emissions scandal?

In 2015 ‘dieselgate’ came to light. The diesel emissions scandal found that various car manufacturers had installed defeat devices to manipulate diesel emission tests. These car companies, if found guilty, purposely misled their customers whilst they were purchasing diesel vehicles. While customers were led to believe their new vehicle complied with legal emission limits, in actual fact they were emitting illegal amounts of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

Renault is one of the many car manufacturers currently believed to have misled their customers. Following the revelation of ‘dieselgate’, Renault found themselves in the middle of a criminal investigation in France. While analysing various Renault engines, researchers discovered that many of the company’s diesel engines were emitting dangerous levels of NOx. It would appear that Renault had installed defeat devices in its diesel vehicles similar to those used by other car manufacturers involved in ‘dieselgate’.

Initial investigations also concluded that potentially up to 700,000 Renault vehicles may have cheated during emissions tests. If you have bought, leased, or financed a Renault vehicle that was manufactured between 2008 to 2018, your vehicle may be affected.

What is a defeat device?

Various car manufacturers have been found to have installed defeat devices in their diesel vehicles in order to manipulate emissions tests. Defeat device software works by understanding when a vehicle is being put through a lab test process and will limit the amount of engine power used during the test. This will artificially reduce the amount of emissions the vehicle produces, ensuring the diesel car or vehicle will pass the test.

But when the same vehicle is tested in real-world driving conditions, they are found to be emitting a dangerous amount of NOx. Increased levels of NOx can lead to several environmental and public health concerns including acid rain, increased air pollution, smog, and respiratory diseases (e.g., lung cancer, asthma, and bronchitis). In the UK, poor air pollution is believed to have contributed to up to 36,000 premature deaths every year.

Why should I make a diesel emissions claim?

There are a host of reasons why you should consider making your Renault diesel emissions claim. These include:

  • You have been misled, don’t let big businesses get away with it: If your vehicle is found to have been producing an illegal amount of NOx, the car manufacturer you purchased your vehicle from purposely misled you during the car purchase process. They have done this to line their own pockets, while also blatantly disregarding public health and the environment.

  • Renault has purposely chosen to harm the environment and public health: Increased levels of NOx can result in a whole host of dangers. Through the choices of car manufacturers, the environment has seen an increase in air pollution as well as an increased risk of smog, acid rain, and damaged crops. Additionally, public health concerns including respiratory diseases, cancer and premature death are all consequences of increased NOx levels, caused, in part, by the use of defeat devices.

  • You deserve compensation for your financial losses: Most affected diesel vehicle owners have found themselves out of pocket after being misled by major car companies. Whether it’s money spent ‘fixing’ your vehicle, decreased vehicle value, increased fuel costs, or other maintenance-related expenses, it should be car manufacturers paying the price, not the consumer.

  • You have nothing to lose: Our recommended law firm will represent you and your claim on a “no win, no fee” basis. This means you do not need to pay any upfront legal fees and you pay nothing if your claim is unsuccessful. However, you must be prepared to pay for your legal costs with part of your compensation if you are successful.

Renault Diesel Emission Claims FAQs

What our customers ask us

Am I eligible to make a Renault diesel emissions claim?

If you purchased, leased, or financed a diesel Renault vehicle that was manufactured between 2008 and 2018 then you may be eligible for compensation. While research and investigations are continuing regarding the models and engines that have been affected by ‘dieselgate’ a variety of Renault vehicle models have already been identified as featuring a defeat device. These include:

  • Clio
  • Captur
  • Espace
  • Megane
  • Scenic

However, if you own a diesel Renault vehicle manufactured during the affected time frame but it isn’t one of these listed models, your vehicle still may be affected.

There is no standardised amount of compensation you may receive if your claim is successful. Over 100,000 diesel emissions claims have been settled in the UK, with up to £100m in compensation having been paid out to customers in England and Wales. In other successful cases, customers have received between 25-75% of their vehicle’s value.

Similar to the amount you may receive, the length in which your claim may take to be decided can also vary. The primary reason behind these varying time frames, with claims taking from months to years to be decided, depends on the car manufacturer’s willingness to admit to any wrongdoing. The best case scenario is when the manufacturer opts to settle outside of court, in order to reduce any negative press they may receive.

We understand that there are a variety of circumstances that you may believe could impact your ability to make a claim. However, typically if you can prove your ownership of an affected vehicle you more than likely have a case.

  • Can you make multiple Renault diesel claims? If you owned/leased/financed multiple Renault diesel vehicles that were manufactured during the affected time period you can make multiple individual claims. However, you must be able to provide documentation that proves your ownership of every vehicle you wish to make a claim on.
  • I received my Renault vehicle as a gift, can I still make a claim? As long as you can prove your ownership of an affected vehicle, you can still make a claim. For example, if you inherited your Renault vehicle, you can provide a copy of the Will which proves your inheritance.
  • Can I still make a claim if I no longer have possession of the vehicle? Even if you no longer own/lease/finance your previous Renault vehicle, you can still make a claim. However, you must be able to provide evidence of your ownership of the affected vehicle and documentation related to the sale of the vehicle.

If you can provide the required documentation to prove your ownership of an affected Renault diesel vehicle and wish to make a claim, we can put you in touch with a reliable law firm. The diesel emissions claim solicitors will represent your claim on a “no win, no fee” basis. With our recommended law firm, you will not have to pay any legal fees unless your claim is successful. Even then, the fees you will be required to pay will be subtracted from your compensation winnings. If, for whatever reason, your claim was unsuccessful you will have nothing to pay. Similarly, there will be no upfront legal fees.

If you wish to take your compensation claim forward, you can start the process by filling out our 2-minute claim application. We will then confirm your eligibility and follow up with you on the upcoming procedures. Additionally, we can also put you in contact with our recommended legal claims solicitors who specialise in these kinds of cases. All you need to do is provide the required documentation to get started.
