What Is The Skoda Diesel Emissions Scandal?

In 2015, the diesel emissions scandal first came to light when a variety of VW Group diesel vehicles were found to have cheat software installed. The most common type of software used is known as a defeat device, which allows a car manufacturer to hide the amount of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions a vehicle will emit during test conditions. While it would appear that a diesel vehicle has passed the emissions tests, in some cases they were actually emitting up to 40 times more than the legal limits.

Skoda, like Audi and Seat, is a subsidiary of the VW Group. Understandably, the Skoda diesel engines were analysed in relation to the wider VW Group investigation. It is believed that approximately 131,569 Skoda diesel vehicles have been affected by the scandal in the United Kingdom.

Additionally, Skoda vehicles may also have had their fuel economy statistics greatly exaggerated. This means that specific Skoda models may be using more fuel than what was initially expected, which will result in increased fuel costs for households.

What Skoda Diesel Vehicles Have Been Affected?

While the diesel emissions scandal came to light several years ago, the investigations into the matter are still ongoing. As such, a complete list of the affected vehicles is yet to be confirmed. However, any Skoda vehicles that contain a diesel engine are more than likely impacted, especially if they were manufactured before 2016.

The list of confirmed affected Skoda models includes:

  • Skoda vehicles manufactured before 2016.
  • Skoda vehicles that contain either a: 1.2, 1.6, or 2.0 litre EA189 diesel engine.

If your vehicle, either past or present, fulfils this criteria, you may be eligible for compensation.

Can I Claim On Multiple Vehicles?

If you have either purchased or leased more than one Skoda vehicle that fulfils the criteria (see above) and could be affected by the diesel emissions scandal, then you can make a claim on each individual vehicle. Each vehicle you make a claim on will be considered on an individual basis, meaning that you will need to present a full case (including evidence) relating to each Skoda diesel vehicle you have owned or leased. You cannot combine multiple vehicles under a single diesel claim – a separate emissions claim will need to be taken out for each vehicle you have owned.

Why Should I Make A Diesel Emissions Claim against Skoda?

Punish The Car Manufacturers That Deliberately Misled Their Customers

Purchasing or leasing any new vehicle is a costly and difficult decision for any customer to make. Not only will you build trust with the car manufacturer you purchase from, but you will also expect them to keep you and your family safe. And Skoda, like other manufacturers before them, have blatantly disregarded this trust and acted dishonestly.

By launching your own Skoda diesel emissions claims, you are taking a stand against big corporations that took your trust for granted. If your Skoda diesel vehicle fulfils the eligibility criteria, you may be able to claim compensation and ensure that car manufacturers cannot get away with breaking the law.

Protect Public Health And The Environment

When considering the direct implications of diesel vehicles releasing dangerous amounts of NOx, no consequence is more severe than the impact on the environment and public health. While no vehicle that utilises either petrol or diesel to power it can be considered environmentally friendly, vehicles that have a defeat device installed are making an already dire environment situation worse – and all unbeknownst to you as the owner of the vehicle.

The main consequences of increasing NOx levels in the atmosphere include:

  • Environmental impacts: acid rain, smog, damage to crops, and increased air pollution.
  • Public health impacts: childhood asthma, respiratory diseases, cancer, and mental health issues like depression.

With the use of defeat devices now exposed, hopefully car manufacturers can work to lower NOx emissions to limit these dire impacts.

You Have Nothing To Lose

Whether it is the environmental and health impacts, increased fuel bills, or the blatant disregard for their customers that empowers you to seek fair compensation against car manufacturers, you have nothing to lose. Having confirmed that you are eligible for compensation, we will put you in contact with a respected law firm that specialises in these cases. They will represent you and your case on a no win, no fee basis, meaning that you will not need to pay any legal costs unless you win compensation at the end of the case.

Skoda Diesel Claims FAQs

What our customers ask us

How Do Car Manufacturers Cheat Emissions Tests?

Vehicles that have a defeat device installed can cheat emissions tests. This is because these types of devices can detect when a vehicle has been placed in test conditions, then following this detection it will work to modify its emissions output. By reducing the amount of emissions, a vehicle that would not be legal in a real-life scenario will still be manufactured and cleared for sale.

If you have chosen to claim compensation, you may be wondering how much you may receive. So far, as part of the VW Group emissions claims, over £26 billion has been paid out in compensation and fines worldwide.

However, in terms of how much compensation you may receive for your individual case, we cannot provide you with an estimated figure. This is because each case is considered on an individual basis, meaning that the amount of compensation awarded will vary massively.

Instead, we focus on creating the strongest case possible for our clients. The easiest way to do this is to form a group claim with victims that have suffered similarly, with each claimer having air-tight evidence which the court will have to side with.

Similar to the amount of compensation you receive, how long your Skoda diesel emission scandal claim may take to conclude will also vary. Like any other time you take legal action, the amount of time it will take for the court to come to a decision could take weeks, months, or even years.

One of the biggest elements that can impact how long your claim may take to be decided is whether Skoda is willing to admit any wrongdoing. Typically with these kinds of cases, the speediest sequence of events concludes with the company/individual at fault deciding to settle outside of court. A company like Skoda could decide to do this as it will potentially limit the amount of negative press they may receive.

While each case is considered on an individual basis, we are hoping to represent as many Fiat diesel scandal victims as possible. This will ensure that your case is as strong as possible, which will hopefully maximise the amount of compensation you will receive, while also reducing the decision making timeline.
